Memory health

Memory goes stale as a project changes. Health looks through the project’s memory and your personal memory for things to look at, and gives each one something to do. Switchboard never changes a memory on its own: every fix is one you start.

On a project’s Memory tab, the header of What loads in a session here says “Health: 2 to look at” (or “nothing to look at”). Click Show to list the findings, and Hide to put them away.

A memory with a finding also shows a small warning sign on its row; hover it to see what.

Finding What to do
A memory names a file, an npm run script or a make target the project no longer has. Open opens the memory with the reference marked.
Two memories say the same thing: the same name in two folders, or nearly the same description or text. Compare shows them side by side.
MEMORY.md misses memories, or has lines for files that are gone. Fix index shows the change first.
MEMORY.md is past what loads (200 lines or 25 KB). Tidy with Claude…
Memories nobody changed for 180 days. Only listed.

Health checks file names against the repository (what git tracks and what is on disk), package.json and the Makefile. It leaves names of functions, flags, URLs and patterns alone, to keep false alarms out.

Compare shows the two memories side by side. Choose Keep left or Keep right (the other goes to the TrashRecycle Bin), or Merge into left…, which adds the right one’s text under the left one’s and moves the right one to the TrashRecycle Bin. Both ask first, and the toast has Undo.

Fix index shows the change to MEMORY.md: a line for each memory it doesn’t list, and no lines for files that are gone. Nothing else changes. Click Fix index (Command, ReturnControl, Enter) to write it.

Tidy with Claude… opens New session in the project with a prompt that asks Claude to shorten MEMORY.md to fit in 200 lines without dropping facts. Read it, change it if you like, and start it yourself. Switchboard doesn’t run anything.

Health has no settings. See What loads in a session for the MEMORY.md limit.
